BACH FLOWER REMEDIES

In the early 1930's, fifty years before any major research on stress-related disorders was done, Dr. Edward Bach, the renowned British physician and scientist, began to recognize that many of his patients' illnesses seemed to be directly related to their various states of mind. He noted that anxiety, worrisome thoughts, even lack of self-confidence so depleted the individual's vitality that the body lost its natural resistance and became vulnerable to infection and other illnesses. Today current research supports these findings. Bach Flower Remedies have been used safely for over half a century with great success by a broad spectrum of health care professionals worldwide, including medical doctors, dentists, and psychologists, as well as the general public.

The Bach Flower Remedies are totally free of artificial additives and are chemically inert. Unlike many drugs, they do not suppress symptoms, nor do they cause side effects. Bach Flower Remedies do not interfere with and are not affected by any other form of medication a person might be required to take.

CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY

William Garner Sutherland, D.O. (1873-1954) was the first to conceptualize and teach the cranial approach to osteopathic manipulation. Dr. John Upledger, another osteopathic physician, popularized this approach in the late 1970s.

CranioSacral Therapy focuses initially on the membranes encasing the brain and spinal cord. The cranial rhythmic impulse is difficult to measure with equipment, but experienced practitioners can sense it by touch. Disturbances in the flow of cranial fluid are said to reflect pressure on the cranial bones as well as injuries or lesions in the body. These imbalances can be eased by delicate manipulation of the cranial and spinal bones and the soft tissues of the body. This powerful method helps boost blood circulation and assist lymphatic drainage. CranioSacral Therapy affects the connective tissue linking all the organs, bones, and muscles of the body. The aim of treatment is to ensure an even, rhythmic flow of the cranial rhythmic impulse. The result of treatment can be a reduction of both acute and chronic physical pain, and a deep sense of rest and comfort, similar to the calm which comes from quiet introspection or meditation.

FELDENKRAIS METHOD®

The Feldenkrais Method® was developed by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984) who was a physicist, engineer, martial artist, and educator. The Method is a unique and sophisticated approach for enhancing the way people organize their overall physical movement, including consciousness and thought. Grounded in the processes of learning and awareness, The Feldenkrais Method invites us to explore our deeply conditioned, habitual, ways of being embodied. It teaches new, more effective ways to address neuromuscular limitations that contribute to pain and dysfunction—physically, emotionally and psychologically.

The Feldenkrais Method has two modes of education. In individual one-on-one sessions (Functional Integration), the practitioner's instructive touch and verbal cues offer the recipient greater self-awareness of movement patterns and increases possibilities for self-expression. Awareness Through Movement lessons, the second form of this approach, consists of sequences of slow mindful movements organized around various human function.

Healing Touch is a systematic approach to healing using energy interventions that incorporate a variety of therapeutic maneuvers that help individuals move to increasing health and wholeness. Healing Touch was developed through the American Holistic Nurses' Association which offers a multi-level training experience for both lay and medical professionals. Modern research supports findings that Healing Touch reduces pain, improves relaxation, relieves stress, boosts the immune system, and accelerates wound healing. This gentle, non-invasive approach can be used for infants as well as the elderly and everyone in between. Recipients are fully clothed during a session (either sitting or lying down) in a quiet, safe environment.

HERBAL MEDICINE

Medicines made from plants are one of the earliest forms of healing used by humankind, and 80% of the world’s population still relies on herbs for health. Modern herbal medicines, made in a safe and scientific way, are an important help in healing many conditions we see at the Holistic Health Center. Of course, herbal medicines work best when used in conjunction with proper diet, exercise, and stress reduction.

HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE

Homeopathic medicines are scientifically prepared from plants and minerals and are identical to those used by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, the originator of homeopathic medicine over 200 years ago. The medicines are taken in a highly diluted, but potent form which makes them safe to take and free of side effects or allergic reactions.

Homeopathic medicines are different from drugs in that they are non-toxic, do not suppress symptoms, nor are they habit forming. The medicines work by stimulating the body’s innate healing ability and have been applied to a wide variety of medical issues by doctors around the world.

MYOFASCIAL THERAPY

Myofascial Therapy is a manual technique that reduces pain and discomfort while balancing the body’s posture. This realignment allows the body to move fluidly and function more efficiently.

Myofascial Therapy works directly with the fascia to release the muscles and ligaments of the body, allowing them rest in stress-free positions on the skeleton. This in turn eliminates postural tension, thereby benefiting the entire organism. Although the application of this form of touch is very light and gentle, it effects the soft tissue deeply at a cellular level. Due to such a light touch, treatment can be started soon after an injury or trauma, leading to a faster, smoother recovery.

Myofascial Therapy is useful in the treatment of both acute and chronic conditions such as:

  • Postural Alignment

  • Back pain

  • Shoulder/Neck pain

  • Sciatica

  • TMJ Dysfunction

  • Headaches/Migraines

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Arthritis

NEUROMUSCULAR THERAPY

Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a precise, hands-on approach to treating muscular discomfort and pain, using a highly skilled touch. NMT and massage share much in common yet are also quite different. The goal of general massage is restoration and relaxation. The goal of Neuromuscular Therapy is problem solving the particular muscular discomfort that you are feeling through skilled assessment and application of precise treatments.

NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING

Research shows that healthful eating habits are one of the most important building blocks of a long and healthy life.

Many of the people we see quickly notice improved well-being by eliminating or greatly reducing refined and/or artificial sugars, excessive salt, saturated fats and hydrogenated oils, alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, and overly processed foods. At the same time, almost everyone will benefit from increasing their servings of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and beans, and monounsaturated oils as found in olive oil, nuts, seeds and avocados.

Food allergies or intolerances may contribute to your symptoms. If food allergies are suspected, you can be diagnosed by either a food elimination diet or a blood test for antibodies to a wide variety of foods. If your test is positive, you will feel better after these foods are eliminated from your diet. Therapeutic vitamin and mineral supplements are prescribed when needed.

Maintenance of healthy and appropriate eating habits will help make more effective any of the other therapies you might receive at the Center.

POLARITY THERAPY

Polarity Therapy was developed in the late 19th century by Dr. Randolph Stone , an Austrian who spent his life working in the United States as a naturopath, and osteopath. In search of a unifying healing principle, he studied Eastern medical traditions and concluded that all pain or illness is due to an imbalance of life energy and that well-being and deeper self-understanding result when life energy flows without interruption or stagnation. Polarity Therapy understands the body as a system of energy fields in which life energy is kept in constant motion by the pull of opposite poles that act like magnets. Light touch and manipulative techniques are used to pinpoint and relieve stagnation and encourage the free flow of energy within and around the body.

PSYCHOSYNTHESIS

Psychosynthesis, sometimes called the "psychology of the soul," was developed early in the 20th century by Italian psychiatrist Roberto Assagioli. Psychosynthesis is a comprehensive approach to human growth and development that assumes that there is a basic drive toward growth and wholeness in each of us and that this movement is the foundation of our search for liberation, integrity, and love. The obstruction of this natural process results in the cause of many emotional, physical, mental and social ills.

The inclusive framework of Psychosynthesis principles and techniques addresses the entire range of human experiences, both personal and transpersonal. Through guided processes and explorations, Psychosynthesis practitioners aim to integrate, or "synthesize", the life experiences of their clients. Modalities such as guided imagery, journaling, sensory awareness, somatic therapy, painting and drawing, dreamwork, meditation and contemplation are often incorporated.

REFLEXOLOGY

Reflexology is the application of pressure on feet, hands, and ears to bring about a positive physiological change in the body. The theory behind Reflexology is that areas of the feet, hands, and ears correspond to organs and systems of the body. Slow, mindful pressure brings both relaxation and healing to the corresponding area of the body. Several studies indicate that Reflexology can reduce pain and psychological symptoms, such as stress and anxiety, and enhance relaxation and sleep.

REIKI

Reiki is a 200-year-old Tibetan form of laying upon of hands (also known as palm healing) based on the principles of universal life energy or Chi. Reiki is used to treat acute as well as chronic physical and emotional states of imbalance. Benefits include increased vitality and energy, pain and stress reduction, and a balancing of body, mind, emotions and spirit. Reiki is excellent for cancer patients undergoing treatment as well as those recovering from surgery, accidents, trauma, etc. Reiki is also commonly used when a person is in good health but wishes to access a deeper calmer state of well-being and spiritual connection.

Recipients remain clothed during sessions and may sit or lie down comfortably in a warm environment.

SENSORY AWARENESS

Sensory Awareness is a mindfulness practice through which we connect with our own natural intelligence and vitality. German born Charlotte Selver introduced Sensory Awareness to the United States in New York in 1950, and in 1963 to the Esalen Institute in California. Her courses were among the first to influence institutions in “body-awareness” and “non-verbal experience.”

Sensory Awareness focuses on the cultivation of an ever-deepening awareness of our sensory experience as a gateway into ourselves and simultaneously into deeper connection with others and the world around us. This depth of connection is our birthright and anchors us in a more responsive and compassionate way of being. Through this work we can discover what responds in us in the midst of change; and we can learn to rely on our sensations as guides to the fresh terrain of each moment. When we surrender to our own natural responsiveness, we become ready to meet what comes.

Zen teacher Alan Watts called Sensory Awareness “The Living Zen.”

ZERO BALANCING

Zero Balancing is a hands-on healing system designed to align the subtle energy body with the physical body. It was developed in 1975 by Dr. Fritz Smith, D.O., an American Osteopath and acupuncturist. The energy body directly affects and is often responsible for mood, emotions and vitality. Changes in energy usually precede illness and can have a causal relation to disease in the body.

Gentle and non-invasive, Zero Balancing is pleasant to receive. Many people describe an experience of expanded awareness and a significant reduction in tension. As with all other forms of somatic therapies, you do not have to be in a state of disease or distress to receive a Zero Balancing session.
